Creating a dream road trip is on many bucket lists and we at So Much 2 See are no exception. Each trip we take is to a point planned. So here is an example of how I go about planning each trip.
We will use the example of travelling from the outer suburb of Windsor, NSW to Cairns QLD, involves planning an exciting route, choosing attractions to visit along the way, and ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable journey. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you create your dream road trip:
1. Plan Your Route:
- Decide on the main highways or scenic routes you want to take. For example, you could take the Pacific Highway (M1) along the coast, which offers beautiful coastal views, or take a more inland route for a different experience.
- Use online mapping tools like Google Maps to plan your route. Consider factors like distance, driving time, and any specific places you want to visit along the way.
TIP: I zoom in on the map follow the route and see if anything interesting comes up. Also if using Google Maps you can also look for rest areas along the route you have chosen.
2. Choose Attractions and Stops:
- Research attractions and landmarks along your route that interest you. This could include national parks, beaches, historic sites, scenic viewpoints, and quirky roadside attractions.
- Some notable stops along the way might include Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island, and the Great Barrier Reef.
- Plan your stops strategically to break up the driving and make the most of your journey.
TIP: To reduce the cost of fuel we follow the 300km or 3hrs while towing the caravan.
3. Accommodation:
- Research and book caravan parks along your route a few days in advance, or earlier if you're travelling during peak seasons. Other options could include pubs, campsites, or national parks. Showgrounds are another great choice.
- Consider staying in unique accommodations like beachfront, eco-lodges, or farm stays to enhance your road trip experience.
4. Packing and Preparation:
- Make a packing list to ensure you have everything you need for the trip, including clothing, toiletries, snacks, entertainment (books, music, podcasts), navigation tools (GPS, maps), and any camping gear if you plan to camp along the way.
- Check your vehicle's condition and ensure it's roadworthy for the long journey. Bring along emergency supplies like a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, and a spare tyre. It is also great if you have a recovery kit just in case you a stuck on the beach or maybe even giving a fellow traveller a helping hand.
5. Food and Dining:
- Research dining options along your route, including local restaurants, cafes, and food markets. Consider trying regional specialties and cuisines for a memorable culinary experience.
- Pack a cooler with snacks and drinks for the road to save money and have convenient refreshments during the drive.
TIP: Carry extra water and food just in case, depending on the trip you plan these items can be difficult to obtain. Also, extra fuel stored in a proper jerrycan is another item you should bring along as well.
6. Budgeting:
- Create a budget for your road trip, considering expenses such as fuel, accommodation, food, attractions, and any activities you plan to do along the way.
- Look for deals and discounts on accommodation, attractions, and dining to make the most of your budget.
TIP: Carry cash. Not a lot but there are plenty of places in the outback and small towns that prefer cash, also if internet is down you will need cash to pay for those important purchases like food and fuel if that does happen.
7. Safety and Logistics:
- For our international friends familiarize yourself with road rules and regulations in Australia, including speed limits, seatbelt laws, and driving etiquette. Also if planning on purchasing a car and a caravan for your dream trip weight issues is another factor to consider.
- Plan for rest breaks during long drives to avoid fatigue. Share driving responsibilities if possible and take turns behind the wheel.
- Keep important documents like your driver's license, registration, and insurance information readily accessible in case of emergencies.
8. Flexibility and Enjoyment:
- While it's essential to have a plan, be open to spontaneity and unexpected discoveries along the way. Embrace detours and unplanned stops that pique your interest.
- Take plenty of photos and document your journey to capture memories that you'll cherish for years to come.
By following these steps and incorporating your interests and preferences, you can create a dream road trip that's tailored to your tastes and ensures an unforgettable adventure.
